From Pioneer to PropTech Leader

Robert A. Chiti secures a self-service kiosk patent and founds OpenTech Alliance in his garage. After convincing four friends to join him, they set to work learning the industry and creating their first prototype.


To support self-service transactions at the kiosk and help operators reduce labor costs and provide critical customer service, OpenTech launched a self storage call center to take payments, reserve unit rentals and answer tenant questions over the phone.
OpenTech introduces XpressPay and Live! Chat to give tenants additional self-service options to quickly resolve their payment and service needs.

OpenTech purchases majority share of online auction platform StorageTreasures, the largest self storage auction platform in North America, and becomes the managing owner of StorageTreasures.com. The company added StorageStuff.bid in 2018 to further expand auction resources for storage operators.

With backing from Public Storage, OpenTech builds the industry's first cloud-based access control solution. Designed specifically for self storage, INSOMNIAC CIA (Centralized Intelligent Access) gives operators control of a single or thousands or properties from anywhere.

OpenTech launches INSOMNIAC SmartEye to stop crime at self storage facilities before damage is done using a combination of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and a Virtual Security Team.

OpenTech moves to a larger office space to accommodate its growing team. Now with a dispersed staff over 200+ employees strong, the company houses over 120 team members at its corporate location in Phoenix, Arizona.

OpenTech commemorates 20 years of providing technology solutions exclusively to the self storage industry with the launch of the industry's first OpenTech Experience Center. Operators can visit this interactive space to see firsthand how the company's solutions work to support their business.

In its most ambitions venture yet, OpenTech enters the European self storage market with the introduction of its proven access control solution, INSOMNIAC CIA. Other INSOMNIAC solutions, including self-service Kiosks and electronic SmartLocks, are coming soon.
