From Pioneer to PropTech Leader
OpenTech was started by Robert A. Chiti in 2003 in his garage, when he purchased a patent for a self-service system that rented self storage units and processed customer payments. It was a simple piece of paper — no software, no hardware, no service offering. With limited funding but a sound technology and service concept, Robert and his team successfully built the company from the ground up into a global self storage solutions provider. Robert A. Chiti secures a self-service kiosk patent and founds OpenTech Alliance in his garage. After convincing four friends to join him, they set to work learning the industry and creating their first prototype.

To support self-service transactions at the kiosk and help operators reduce labor costs and provide critical customer service, OpenTech launched a self storage call center to take payments, reserve unit rentals and answer tenant questions over the phone.
OpenTech introduces XpressPay and Live! Chat to give operators additional self-service options to help tenants quickly resolve their payment and service needs.

OpenTech acquires majority stake in StorageTreasures, North America's top self storage auction platform, now managing StorageTreasures.com. In 2018, they expanded with StorageStuff.bid.

With backing from Public Storage, OpenTech pioneers the first cloud-based access control solution for self storage: INSOMNIAC CIA (Centralized Intelligent Access), empowering operators to manage single or multiple properties remotely.

OpenTech introduces INSOMNIAC SmartEye for pre-emptive security monitoring via AI, machine learning and a Virtual Security Team.

OpenTech moves to a larger office space to accommodate its growing team. Now with a dispersed staff over 200+ employees strong, the company houses over 120 team members at its corporate location in Phoenix, Arizona.

OpenTech unveils the industry's first OpenTech Experience Center. Operators can explore firsthand how its solutions benefit storage businesses - watch now to see what's inside.

OpenTech commemorates 20 years in self storage tech with a look back at the people that helped build their success. From garage startup to global self storage solutions provider, the company supports more than 17,000 facilities worldwide.
OpenTech enters the European self storage market with its proven access control solution, INSOMNIAC CIA. More INSOMNIAC solutions, like self-service kiosks and electronic SmartLocks, are coming soon.
