Multi-Factor Authentication Adds a New Layer of Access Verification for Self Storage Keypads

OpenTech Alliance today announced the availability of keypad-based Multi-Factor Authentication for self storage facilities using INSOMNIAC CIA access control. The new feature gives operators a flexible way to add another layer of verification at selected property keypads.

When MFA is enabled, a tenant first enters their existing access code at an OpenTech keypad. A one-time verification code is then sent by text or email message to the information associated with the tenant’s account. The visitor must enter that code at the keypad before access is granted.

The additional verification helps reduce unauthorized entry resulting from skimmed, shared or otherwise compromised access codes. It also gives operators greater confidence that the person entering the property is the tenant associated with the account or someone they have authorized to be onsite.

Access codes remain a convenient and familiar way for tenants to enter a facility, but a code alone cannot confirm who is standing at the keypad. Multi-Factor Authentication gives operators the flexibility to add a second layer of verification at the keypads, or during specific time windows, wherever it provides the most value; all managed through the same IoE platform operators already use to control property access.

The feature is configurable at the property and keypad level. Operators can apply it to selected keypads and require verification continuously or during designated hours, allowing each property to align the added protection with its operating model, physical layout and security needs. This flexibility can help operators strengthen verification at a primary entrance or during higher-risk periods without requiring tenants to repeat the process at every interior access point.

Keypad-based Multi-Factor Authentication is available now for facilities using INSOMNIAC CIA access control. Existing customers can contact OpenTech Support to enable the feature.
