INSOMNIAC Kiosk Completes 76 Percent of All Rentals

OpenTech customer Brian Hurd sees immediate results with new INSOMNIAC Kiosk

PHOENIX, Arizona – September 21, 2010 – OpenTech proudly announces another kiosk customer that is experiencing early success.  A+ East Mesa Storage in Las Cruces, New Mexico is owned by Brian Hurd and his partners – Johnny Curry and John Curry, his brother-in-law and father-in-law, respectively.  The family has worked together for many years, but most recently teamed up to build a storage facility that sits on three acres with nearly 150 units.

A+ East Mesa Self Storage is the only facility around the area that has a kiosk giving them a competitive advantage through added customer convenience.

After just completing the facility in May 2010, they are pushing toward their occupancy goals that will help them continue with the next phase of their project – expanding the facility by another 150 units. “This kiosk concept makes perfect sense,” commented Hurd. “Our facility is essentially run unmanned and is saving us money to help us add more units and that is a beautiful thing.”

Hurd’s INSOMNIAC 900 has rented 34 units (76 percent of all rentals) since opening.  Hurd was initially concerned that customers would be intimidated by the technology but being able to review the digital recording of each transaction has been very enlightening and valuable.  “It’s all been positive,” said Hurd. “Having a kiosk is so convenient for my customers and for me.”

Las Cruces, New Mexico has a population of about 95,000 people, and Hurd’s facility is about eight miles from the city center positioned in an up and coming area. “We have not been marketing as aggressively as we would like, just because we’ve been so busy with construction,” admits Hurd. “But we are starting to have good luck with newspaper ads, our web site and running promotions on our banner outside the building.”

A-eastmesa2A+ East Mesa Self Storage is the only facility around the area that has a kiosk and Hurd believes it gives him a competitive advantage. “My customers can rent units and pay bills any time of day or night.” Hurd was able to illustrate this point by discussing a video transaction that took place with one of his more challenging customers. The customer went to the kiosk and pushed the call center button, and the INSOMNIAC Live! call center agent took over the transaction for the customer. Hurd later called the customer to learn more about his experience and to his delight the customer was shocked at the ease of the process and commented “All I had to do was sign my name and they took care of the rest.”

INSOMNIAC Kiosks Collect over $38 million in Rental Fees

OpenTech Releases Detailed Kiosk Usage Data for the First Half of 2010

PHOENIX, Arizona – September 14, 2010– OpenTech Alliance, Inc. today announced it has exceeded the 38 million dollar mark in rental fees collected by its INSOMNIAC kiosks at their client’s self storage facilities across North America, with over $9M of that amount being collected in the first half of 2010. In their ongoing effort to be a transparent company, OpenTech is releasing these detailed kiosk usage numbers for the first six months of 2010 and will publish the 2010 Kiosk Usage White Paper early next year.  This level of transparency gives the self storage industry the opportunity to see how consumers are adopting the self service channel. This trend towards self service should come as no surprise since consumers by the millions are opting to make purchases over the internet instead of face to face with a human.

Self storage owners have already purchased over 500 INSOMNIAC kiosks to date.  OpenTech reported 427 kiosks were online as of January 1, 2010 and another 41 came online during the period ending June 30, 2010.  For the first half of 2010, consumers used INSOMNIAC kiosks to rent 8,778 storage units, make 76,389 payments, and purchase 4,652 locks, representing a total of $9,265,998

“INSOMNIAC kiosks can serve as a hedge against increasing expenses in this tough economic climate.  The kiosks give self storage owners the ability to reduce their staffing expense without sacrificing customer service” said Robert Chiti President and CEO of OpenTech Alliance.

For the first half of 2010, 47% of moves-ins and payments took place outside of office hours.  This proves there is a tremendous opportunity for storage owners to acquire more customers by being open for business outside of regular office hours.  The other 53% of kiosk usage occurred during regular office hours. This clearly shows the kiosks complement on-site managers and demonstrates that customers are comfortable using self-service technology.

Credit cards are the preferred method of payments at the kiosk.  However, the use of cash and checks represents 48% in total payments made at the kiosk.  With all three forms being used a great deal the need for providing consumers with an on premise payment system that supports all three forms of payment is a must.
